Estrellitas

Promoting Latina Growth

Presented by:

Junior League of Atlanta & North Atlanta High School

Estrellitas is a program for Latina teen students at North Atlanta High School grades 9-12. The program strives to encourage these youths to stay in school, prepare them to succeed in the educational arena, develop their leadership skills, and to serve their community. The program is free, but students must register with the form at the end of this page.

Estrellitas Mission

To empower Latina teens in the Atlanta community by developing and nurturing their leadership, intellectual, and cultural potential.

Goal and Objectives

The goal of the program is to build resiliency skills, positive identity and self-esteem through a comprehensive positive youth development programming. This tool seeks to reduce risky behaviors among middle and high school youth and to prevent them from engaging in risky behaviors in the future.

Participants will develop resiliency skills through their participation in the varied activities. Participants will demonstrate positive attitudinal change regarding school, their peers, and  parents, and  will  have increased their self-esteem as measured through ongoing program evaluation.

History

Early adolescence is a critical period of transition for all youth, marked by biological and social changes, experimentation, risk-taking, and increased independence. To support and empower Atlanta’s Latina girls during this period, the Junior League of Atlanta developed an educational program which encourages participants to develop their leadership skills and improve their self-esteem while building an identity firmly grounded in an understanding of their cultural heritage.

Estrellitas was established by the Junior League of Atlanta in the fall of 2007 in partnership with the Latin American Association after the JLA Community Needs Assessment Committee identified a lack of programs in the Atlanta community available to address the high numbers of Latina teen pregnancies and high school dropout rates. In 2013 the program merged with LaAmistad, Inc.

Estrellitas is now a LaAmistad program sponsored by the Junior League of Atlanta and developed in partnership with North Atlanta High School, part of the Atlanta Public School system. The partnership allows the weekend Estrellitas program and the in-classroom curriculum for these teens provided by North Atlanta High School to work closely on curriculum thus providing a more comprehensive program and opportunities for parental engagement.
