No teaching experience or Spanish fluency is required—just a passion for helping kids succeed!
Students love and need volunteers who can make a weekly commitment so we’re flexible. Choose a schedule that works for you! Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Thursday in 1.5-hour blocks from 3:30 PM-5:00 PM. Days and times vary by location.
Find more information about our locations [here].
Afterschool Volunteers Must:

ILaAmistad ESL
About the Program
LaAmistad’s ESL Program is dedicated to helping community members learn English, and we rely on passionate volunteers to make it happen! We offer four levels of ESL classes, running on 10-week semesters, with 30 hours of instruction per semester. Classes are offered at flexible times, including mornings, evenings, and weekends, to accommodate student and volunteer schedules. Find more information about our locations [here].
As a volunteer, you’ll play a key role in supporting our students, whether you’re teaching, co-teaching, or assisting in other capacities. Throughout your experience, our ESL Coordinator will provide training, ongoing support and curriculum resources to ensure you feel confident and prepared. Join us in making a real difference in the lives of our learners and help them build the skills they need to succeed!
Volunteer Opportunities
This role is perfect for volunteers with ESL teaching experience who are excited to lead a class and inspire students. You’ll need to commit to a 10-week semester, and in return, you’ll gain rewarding experience while helping others thrive. We can’t wait to see what you bring to the classroom!
Looking to gain hands-on ESL experience? Become an ESL Co-Teacher and work alongside an experienced Lead Teacher to support adult learners. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of a dynamic teaching team. Like our Lead Teachers, Co-Teachers must be able to commit to a 10-week semester. Ready to dive in? We’d love to have you! Being bilingual is a plus!
Can’t commit to the full 10-week semester but still want to help? Our ESL Subs are volunteers who fill in when a Lead or Co-Teacher is unable to teach. You’ll go through the same onboarding process as our regular teachers and step in whenever you’re available. It’s a flexible way to get involved and make a difference when you can. Let’s work together to keep the learning going!
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
All LaAmistad ESL teachers will be familiarized with the program resources and will complete a class observation prior to placement. If you can inspire and encourage students with patience and empathy, you have what it takes to teach ESL! The ability to work with adult students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds is important, and your commitment will make a lasting impact.
Our ESL volunteers must:
· Be 18 years or older
· Be a fluent English speaker
· Be able to make a 10-week commitment
